Top Five Mistakes

So here are my top five. Avoid these and you’re starting out better equipped than many people!

  1. It’s better to get a puppy than an adult.  It’s not always.  Whether it is or isn’t depends on your lifestyle.  If you work a lot then a puppy is going to be a big problem because they need lots of attention.
  2. It’s good to go for a popular breed.  Not always.  There might be lots of breeders just in it for the money.  How would you choose which breeder would give you a lovely dog, and screen out poor breeders?
  3. Small dogs need less exercise than big onesAbsolutely not.  There are some small dogs who need TONS of exercise and large dogs which need much less.  Some big dogs can do well in apartments!
  4. I’ll get a dog for the kids.  Only if you’re prepared to do all the work.  That’s all the walking, feeding, grooming and so on. Don’t expect your kids to take an interest long term, unless you’re very lucky and have one that wants to be a vet.
  5. It’s just about what appeals. This is the biggest mistake most people make.  They get something which looks nice only to find out if needs more work, food, exercise, training, vets bills or anything else than they can give.   Then it becomes a nuisance and ends up in rescue, or worse.  This is the main reason why 50% of all dogs homed or purchased fail with their families in less than 12 months.

So there are my Top 5 ‘Don’t Do’ tips to get you off to a headstart.  Some people make all these mistakes all together and then wonder why their life becomes a nightmare.  It’s not the dog’s fault – it’s just not matched up with their needs and lifestyle.

Think about these mistakes.  Were you possibly about to make one, two or all of them?  If the answer is ‘Yes’ then that’s great because you’ve just been given a big helping hand!

There are many more mistakes that people make, besides these.  in fact there are about 16 common errors, any one of which can give the wrong outcome. You need to know how to avoid them ALL to be sure of choosing your dog correctly.  Once you know what these are you can really focus on how to choose well.  And you can do it first time, and every time.
