What is a responsible breeder?
What do we mean by a responsible breeder? Well that’s someone who breeds for quality, understands what they are doing, spends the proper amount of money on their dogs, is ethical, honest and trustworthy.
There are lots of breeders about. Many are great, but you don’t want to unwittingly get sucked in by a puppy farm (mill) or backyward breeder who doesn’t know what they are doing. That route can end up in a poorly socialised dog, sickly dog or one with temperament issues (or even all three).
So here are some top tips for spotting a responsible breeder:
Ten Top Tips
- You get several great word of mouth recommendations about them – from people, or other breeders (yes good breeders don’t want poor ones doing business)
- They are overflowing with information for you before you meet, without you even asking for any
- They require a pre-qualification questionnaire, to check out whether you meet their homing requirements before they will let you visit them
- You can visit their house – where the dogs are kept indoors, as part of the family
- You can meet all their dogs
- Their dogs are clean, healthy, happy and well tempered. They are pleased to see you, not cowering or aggressive
- The breeder keeps excellent records, such as costs, breed lines
- They can answer all of your questions easily
- They require an ownership contract to take away a dog, and
- Will keep in touch afterwards.
Of course there is a lot more to it than this. There’s a lot you can observe at a breeder’s house if you know what to look for (you don’t even need to ask questions). There is also a huge amount to explore about what they do and how they do it. You also need to like them too!
Finding a responsible breeder means going into detail. This will ensure you get the right outcome – a happy, healthy dog for you.
P.S. If you want to find a responsible breeder, there’s a massive checklist of all the things you need to know but possibly didn’t know you needed! Not all breeders will have everything on that list, but some will tick most of the boxes. The formula for success covers all of that and you can try it risk free for 60 days.
