Bev’s Work With Dogs
Since those early days I dedicated my life to finding out all about what really makes a perfect match.
Rescue work
I made up for my early mistakes by using what I’d learned to help others make great choices. I fostered and rehomed rescue dogs. Then I moved onto the rescue merchandising, mail order business and running an information stand at dog shows.
The rescue work was so rewarding, but the impact was just too small. It was only addressing the symptom of the problem and not the cause. The cause being just not enough help for people starting out so they were choosing all wrong and ending up with a disaster. Leading of course to overflowing rescue centres like the one I was with.
Dog Sourcing
I also helped a friend of mine in Austria find her perfect ‘English Racing Greyhound’. I searched the greyhound breeders and trainers near where I lived for the best pedigree puppies available. I found 2 ‘best’ litters, sired by a champion Austrialian racer. Both were bred out of Irish racing bitches and had excellent pedigrees.
Tigi was in litter 2. She was everything I would have chosen for myself – extremely intelligent, beautifully marked and just with that ‘something extra’ that none of the others had.
Tigi now lives with Doris near Vienna and has great fun showing the european greyhounds a clean pair of heels on the nearby Czech racetrack!
Dog breeding
I also became a dog breeder by accident. I was interested in getting an azawakh, and came across a pregnant bitch owned by someone who needed help desperately. The pedigree was superb, so I jumped in with both feet and paid for all the shipping and the veterinary costs – a total of about $3,000.
My friends at Kel Simoon Azawakhs collected Dari and she gave birth to 6 beautiful puppies in 2007. These are all now in amazing homes. ‘Mum’ Dari lives in Washington. Her puppies are now champions in the show ring and on the coursing field. I didn’t take a puppy myself and never got all the costs back.
Dog discovery and breed stands
Every year I ‘woman’ a breed stand at the 2 biggest dog events in the UK – Crufts and ‘Discover Dogs’. I ‘woman’ the azawakh stand with Mary Snowdon, president of the UK Azawakh Association. Here I give advice about the breed, breed lines and more. Robin sometimes does the greyhound rescue stands as well.
General advice
I sometimes give out quick tips and general advice in the course of my dog walking. Quite often the help seems to be about dealing with problem behaviour, especially nervousness and aggression. I’ve had dogs with both of these issues before so I’ve first hand knowledge. I usually end up recommending the people try Bach Flower Remedies and the DAP Pheromone Diffuser for dogs first.
