Train Your Dog For A Happy Life

Having a dog is great.  Having the right dog is even greater.  But training your dog makes all the difference! If you’ve already come via the video post, just scroll down for the article.

You’ve found your dog and brought it home….

You’ve done your homework, and decided on your dog.  It’s a perfect match for your lifestyle. You’ve bought one from an ethical dog breeder, or adopted it through rescue and brought it home.  All good so far!

But dogs don’t know how to be good citizens straight away.  If you don’t teach them what this means to you, your life will be miserable.  Imagine you have a beautiful dog, but:

  • it will not come when called, so you’re always running after it to get it back
  • it toilets indoors as well as outside, so you’ve got endless floor cleaning to do or bills for new carpets
  • it jumps up at all your visitors, so no-one wants to visit any more
  • it barks all the time and your neighbours complain
  • it chews your rugs, shoes and DVDs

So you have to teach your dog good manners. It needs to learn the rules from you.  The difference between having an untrained, unruly dog, and a well-behaved one is unbelievable.  With a well-trained dog life is easy, fun, sweet and happy.

I know what it’s like to have a dog which is difficult to control.  A few years ago I had one. I tried everything I knew to train him out of pulling on the lead, stop him going AWOL when the mood took him, and stop him snapping at my other dogs.  I also tried as best I could to socialise him with people, but he bit several and never improved.

Life with this dog was hard.  Eventually he went back to his breeder and we could relax again.  Life since has been great. I have dogs which are trained as far as I need them to be.  They are happy, well adjusted ‘children’ who make my life complete.

Training your dog good manners will make the difference between a miserable, stressful life with your dog and a truly fantastic one.  Even training in the basics (sit, stay, come, off, down, leave it),  housetraining and walking nicely on the lead can improve your life 100%.  When you have a well-behaved dog you can delight in – indoors or out – that’s when dog ownership is at its absolute best.

Dogs also love to learn, and to please you.  So invest in your life by investing in your dog.  Everyone needs a well-trained dog.  For that you need a good dog training book, so get one today, and have some fun!
