Choosing A Dog For Your Size And Health

First off let me say this isn’t about being size-ist or health-ist.  There ARE dogs for every type of person, including those with dog allergies.

This is about choosing a dog based on your physical characteristics.

A few years ago I came across a lady about the same height as me with 3 dogs.  We were all on a beach not far from here.  Her dogs were aggressive.  Thankfully they were all on leads.  However when they saw my dogs they lept forward, dragging the lady across the sand, with her yelling :

Keep your dogs away, if they go I won’t be able to hold them!

Now this lady must have had this experience hundreds of times.  After all she was on a public beach where lots of dogs go, especially during the summer.

But to admit that she could not physically handle them all was a little worrying!  And certainly very irresponsible of her to have three aggressive dogs she was physically unable to control.  Imagine how bad things could get if they did get away from her.

The reason I’m explaining this is that my health has changed.  So my needs from a dog have also changed.   My back is not as great as it was.  So I’m now looking for smaller dogs I can lift and carry easily if I need to.  The days of choosing a 34 kilo dog are now gone.

If you are physically unable to handle the dog it can also lead to other problems:

We have customers bring their new puppy or dog to us and sometimes we would like to thump them. Often elderly ladies will think a larger dog would be better for them for company and protection. However, they physically can not handle them to even get them to the point of training. Dog Trainer, USA

So when thinking about choosing a dog breed, do consider your size, strength and health as well as other factors such as what type of house you have and how big your garden is.

Choosing a big dog if you’re a small lady might not be the best idea, even if you have a strong partner.  Because there will be a time when you have to handle it on your own.  Can you imagine lifting an injured Great Dane that weighs more than you into the car?  Will you be able to control a boisterous Rottweiler?

So take a little time to think about finding a dog you can physically handle.  And project forward a few years.  Is it likely you’ll still be able to physically handle it then too?  Because you need to plan for the long term of say the next 10-15 years.

Ok there will always be unforseen circumstances.  But if you think about what’s suitable for your size, weight and health now, that will be a good start to choosing your dog.

Choosing A Dog The Right Way

It’s a fact that 50% of all people who get a dog have to rehome it in less than 12 months.  It’s also a very sad truth that a huge number of puppies bought are from puppy farms – raised in appalling conditions without adequate care, veterinary treatment, food or socialisation.  Many have health problems and behavioural issues.  And these contribute to the problems you as owners face when you get them home.

Failure HURTS.   The emotional and financial cost of choosing the wrong dog can be hard to recover from.   Learning to choose a dog the right way takes a long time. You have to know all the questions before you know if you have the answers.  Missing even a small piece of the puzzle can cause serious problems.

That’s why this site was set up.  My mission in life is for everyone who is right for a dog to have a dog they love to live with.  To get rid of as many puppy farms as possible, and rescue centres, by making sure you choose right first time.

You can choose to get it right.  The tools on this site give you all the opportunity you need to choose the right dog.  Not everyone has lots of money to splash about so there’s everything from free to a serious investment.  However if you’re spending $800 or more on a pedigree puppy then just a little bit extra invested now could make all the difference later on.
